Auspicious Akae Faceted Side Plate
This side plate draws the eye with its unique silhouette, inspired by the tagasode motif, which depicts a beautiful kimono draped over a traditional clothing rack. The graceful curves are created using a traditional technique known as kata-uchi, in which a slab of clay is pressed into a plaster mold to form its shape.
The decoration is rendered in akae, using Zoho Kiln’s specially developed natural bengara pigment, prepared from a bengara material no longer in production and carefully preserved by the kiln. Over time, the vibrant red will gently mature, gaining depth and character through years of use. Phoenix and peony motifs are expressed with soft, fluid brushwork.
The three small feet supporting the plate serve not only as a design accent but also provide stability at the table. Traditionally used in kaiseki cuisine for serving sashimi or seasonal dishes, this form brings a sense of ceremony to the presentation.
Ideal for sashimi, vinegared dishes, or even desserts, this small plate elevates any presentation with quiet elegance.
