This soup bowl is hollowed out from Japanese horse chestnut, which is the best material for wooden bowls. It has a slightly matte texture in a calm black color.

Aizu-e, the traditional design of Aizu lacquerware, is hand-painted one by one by skilled maki-e artists. The painting of the famous combination of pine tree, bamboo, and plum is considered an auspicious motif in Japan, bringing good luck and longevity. Also, there are paintings of ceremonial arrows and spinning wheel, both are considered　signature motifs of Aizu lacquerware.
