This teacup saucer from Seigado is shaped like a fallen leaf, with gentle curves, uneven edges, and raised veins that evoke the presence of an actual leaf. It sits quietly beside a cup of sencha or gyokuro (refined green tea), bringing a refined, natural beauty to the tea setting without drawing attention away from the moment itself.

Each piece begins as a flat sheet of copper, hammered by hand into a soft, organic silhouette. The maker forms every leaf individually, so no two surfaces are identical. The red tones are created by selectively heating parts of the copper to a high temperature, while the remaining surface is treated in a traditional patina bath to develop deep violet hues. The solution itself does not remain on the metal; each shade is coaxed out through Seigado’s own carefully balanced mix of water, heat, and timing in the studio.

Because this is a small saucer, it is best paired with a teacup whose foot is under 1.4 in (3.5 cm) in diameter. As an uncoated copper piece without a tin lining, it is not intended for use with food. Instead, it serves beautifully as a rest for cups or small items, allowing its distinctive color, texture, and handcrafted character to be appreciated as a subtle piece of art on the table.

After each use, simply wipe it lightly with a dry cloth. Over time, as the piece is used and cared for in this way, a subtle protective film develops, enhancing its resistance to tarnish.
