Hina dolls are traditional ornamental dolls set for display at households for Hinamatsuri, a seasonal festival observed on March 3 dedicated to the health and happiness of young girls. The dolls represent an emperor and empress of the imperial court. They are dressed in beautiful kimonos, and in the hands of the emperor is a scepter called a shaku, and in the hands of the empress is a fan. Plum blossoms accompany hina dolls when they are displayed on tables or shelves for Hinamatsuri celebrations as also seen on the design of this matcha bowl.

The designs are hand painted by an artisan at Tanaka Toubou one by one, which is a characteristic of Kyo ware. Painted in detail, the matcha bowl is a charming addition to any home, with its intricate design and colorful Hina dolls adorned with adorable smiles.
